Buying shoes from another country often requires converting sizes between the US, UK, and European systems. But these charts are not directly interchangeable — in fact, the same foot size can map to several numbers depending on which system is used. Understanding why UK, US, and EU shoe sizes don't perfectly match let's shoppers avoid the frustration of a bad fit.

Why UK, US, and EU Charts Don't Line Up

UK and US adult shoe sizes advance in steps of about one-third of an inch, or 8.46 to 8.47 mm. In contrast, the EU system is built on Paris points, with one size equal to about two-thirds of a centimetre, or 6.67 mm. These different baselines mean cross-system conversions are only approximate.

For example, a 27 cm foot maps to a US size 9, a UK 8.5, and an EU 42.5, according to a chart from Absolute-Snow. Yet the UK 8.5 falls between the 267 mm and 280 mm brackets in the Mondopoint system, due to the slightly larger progressions. Size charts from major brands, like ZeroUtil, often follow similar patterns of incomplete alignment.

Measure and Check the Brand's Size Chart

The Mondopoint system used by ISO 9407 may seem to offer a bright-optioned solution, with sizes in specific mm lengths.

Why US Men's and Women's Sizes Differ

While UK and EU sizes use the same number scale for men and women, you need a US chart and measure foot length for each gender. US men's and women's sizes operate on separate scales, with women's sizes starting three sizes lower. A US 8 in men's is roughly a 9.5 in women's. That's why a generic "US 8" is not precise without knowing if it's a men's or women's sneaker.

What Real Buyers Can Do

Here’s how to handle uncertain shoe sizes:

  1. Measure your foot in a neutral position at the end of the day
  2. Check the brand's size guide to see which size bracket the foot length falls
  3. Use a shoe size converter only as a double-check to ensure the result makes sense

If you find yourself between sizes in a brand's chart, the key steps are:

  1. Estimate how tight you like the shoe to be, and add that allowance to your measured foot length
  2. Check if that allows you to fall clearly into one brand size or the other
  3. If both are plausible, err on the size recommended in the brand's chart

Footwear sizes are not a universal scale, and there is no one true answer. But as long as you measure, confirm with the brand's own guide, and have a plan for when sizes are uncertain, you'll improve your odds of a good fit no matter where in the world your shoes come from.
